Gen Z Dictionary: Cancelling

What does cancelling mean?

This edition of Word of the Month was inspired by an old trend (2018) that has been coming back in waves since then: the cancel culture.

Speaking with some video industry professionals, it came to our attention that the word is yet not clear and understood among people that are older than 25/30 or so.

So, here you have it.

Below you can find, as usual, the easy-to-digest definition for it, and I’d like to add a long video essay for young-audiences-wannabe-nerds or anybody who wants to dig deeper: Canceling by ContraPoints (who also inspired this month’s definition).

ContraPoints’ video is sharp, extremely accurate and hilarious, so if you have time, watch it and learn about the whole cancel culture’s nuances and implications.

As she mentions, the original purpose was to give power back to people who had none, and bring justice to abusers, even if they were rich, famous, and beloved. But now, it’s turning into something else.
